This makes it very difficult to go down from the stairs on the surface; conversely, if one goes down by jumping into the pit, it is impossible to escape back up without a recoiler (likely not acquired yet) or laboriously digging out all the shale walls to find the up-stair.

Expected behavior: for the stair not to generate blocked by solid shale, risking The Cask of Amontillado-ing the player.
Actual behavior: "For Qud's sake, Montresor!"
