<Heedra> i've just discovered that furniture you are supposed to place items in for village quests can spawn as animate. this makes it impossible to place an item in them unless they either have something to trade or you have some way to beguile or proselityze them, and even in this instance the game counts the exchange as a trade and does not check the quest step off
