Shots that miss intended target (at least when using pistols) (plain misses or overkills (2 shots because of akimbo, one kills the enemy, other flies past)) and hit objects you didn't intend to hit change your current target to that object, which usually seriously disrupts targetting (with unlocked targetting you have to move your cursor across the screen, with locked targetting you usually have to cycle through several targets to target one closest to you)
Imo it's better to set target to the one you aimed at instead of the one you hit
