UPD: ah, just as I assumed: what happened is that I bodyswapped into a creature that was cloned (via cloning draught cooking) from another creature, so it's treated as prolystherized. so when I bodyswap into it, the creature gets recalled to its "master" whenever it tries to leave the area, even though i'm controlling it. killing the "master" creature has solved the problem.
