Firing some missile weapons at an inanimate object consumes ammo but often does not seem to fire anything

When choosing to manually fire at something that isn’t a living entity, the ammunition for the attack is consumed, but the attack usually doesn’t seem to actually happen. Tested this with Issachari Rifle, Chaingun, Eigenpistol, Spaser rifle, Spaser pistol, and Swarm rack. Unsure if this extends to all missile weapons. Shooting at an unexplored space will sometimes fire and sometimes not.
