leaving character creation makes game stop responding

If I’ve been in character creation for more than a few minutes (unsure exactly how long) leaving the character creation menu, either by backing out to the main menu or completing creation, causes the game to stop responding. It happens consistently, but going through character creation quickly works just fine.
