"If, Then, Else" can not be completed if you go down to the bottom of Taproot and die, before collecting Taus Chime

The default action for Taus chime was “chat”. I thought this is the wrong one and this step is maybe optional, so I just went to the bottom of the Taproot.

Afterwards I realized this doesn’t work because the complete quest option just does nothing upon clicking it. I returned to the tree and picked up the chime. On my way back I got hit by zero jelly => brain brine => mental defect => evil twin => evil twin spawns and permastuns + kills me.

I loaded my checkpoint at Chavvah, but the Chime and Dyvvrach are no longer there and I couldn’t return them by any means.
