When you have out-of-phase/nullphase (either/or, Gloaming) companions, they interrupt auto-dig as they follow you, giving a generic message that “you can’t seem to make progress.”

Having your companion follow from a longer distance is an easy workaround, though it took me a bit to figure out what the problem was.
