    Okay, so I went and tried to figure out if just taking out the print statements (which might just have been accidentally left in during debugging?) works, and it seems to work now. So I've attached a patch of what I did to get it work. Again, not very experienced submitting patches, and this may not be the right strategy to solve this bug.
