Flashing firmware clears all settings

Issue #41 invalid
Peter Urbanec created an issue

Flashing new firmware resets all settings, clears all timers and deletes all extensions and plugins. That's OK for getting the box back to a known working configuration, but there should also be an upgrade mode where everything is preserved.

SETUP>Software management>Save settings, then restore settings during setup wizard restores settings after f/w update.

Also MENU>Plugins>Software management>Software Restore looks as though it is supposed to guide the user through this process, but I haven't tested it.

The type of upgrade and the changes it makes is dependent on what's on the USB stick and in what order things are done.

So far we have seen that the bootloader can flash one or more of the following:

    • bootloader
    • splash logo
    • kernel
    • rootfs

I have also tested that putting .ipk packages on a USB stick and plugging the USB stick in, while the box is running, will pop up a menu offering to install/upgrade the packages. This is an alternative to an online .ipk update.

So, in theory, one could use a USB stick with only a kernel and a set of *.ipk files to perform an upgrade without stomping over existing settings in flash.
