use HTML placeholder attribute for forms

Some of our forms use proprietary placeholder text as a hint for the user what to input (for instance, the search form on the main page). HTML5 provides the "placeholder" attribute which could be used instead (see https://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_input_placeholder.asp).
