Boldface with no trailing whitespace

When writing bibliographical references in, e.g., a module's docstring, I sometimes have to write "45(12)" to indicate a paper published in issue 12 of volume 45 of a journal (which I'd like in boldface). Sphinx doesn't seem to process the boldface delimiters properly, complaining that there's no closing delimiters. If I introduce a whitespace before "(12)", all is well.
