Issues solving linear systems with boost.units

Hello again from me, with another issue regarding boost.units. I am no longer sure if boost.units is a blessing or a curse 😞 Either way, thank you very much for your quick responses and fixes!

I have an issue when trying to solve a system of linear equations with boost.units data types:

Here are the responsible lines:

    blaze::DynamicMatrix<boost::units::quantity<boost::units::si::length>> A(3, 3);
    blaze::DynamicMatrix<boost::units::quantity<boost::units::si::length>> b(3, 1);
    blaze::DynamicMatrix<boost::units::quantity<boost::units::si::dimensionless>> x(3, 1);


    x = blaze::solve(A, b);

The error messages indicate some issues with BLAS compatibility if I’m not mistaken.

    Hi David!

    Thanks again for taking the time to create this issue. This time, however, it's a definitive limitation of the Blaze library. As the wiki states:

    Note that the solve() functions can only be used for dense matrices with float, double, complex<float> or complex<double> element type. The attempt to call the function with matrices of any other element type or with a sparse matrix results in a compile time error!

    Blaze is indeed based on BLAS and LAPACK libraries for solving linear systems. Unfortunately the boost.units types don't qualify as BLAS types. Therefore unfortunately there is currently no way to make this work automatically.

    There is, however, a manual way to make this work. Prior to calling solve() you can set up a system matrix and right-hand side of double values by copying the value() of each boost.unit element. Then you solve the linear system. After that you copy the values back. Since solving a general linear system is pretty expensive (i.e. O^3), for large systems the copy operations should not make a significant difference.

    An alternative approach is to try tagging Blaze matrices and vectors (see the last post in issue #166). This approach is not as sophisticated as boost.units, but enables Blaze to recognize the option to use BLAS and LAPACK kernels.

    Sorry for not reading this, I was just scrolling through this section a minute ago and completely missed it! Thanks for the clarification, I will try to implement one of the two approaches.

    I have also tried to make it work by manually implementing the pseudoinverse approach:

    coeffVector = blaze::inv(blaze::trans(designMat) * designMat) * blaze::trans(designMat) * rhs;

    But this did not work either for the case where the design matrix is a vector (one coefficient only). How come this results in the same behaviour?
