Now we have boxy uninspiring circuits

What happened? Hand-made -> EDA/CAD Early EDA had to cope with very little computing resources, which shaped the way circuits were designed. Today, even with very powerful machines, we're stuck with design notions that were shaped 20--30 years ago. It's unnecessary and it's limiting our engineering creativity.
