append and replace don't play nicely together

Boiling down the code at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7186018/why-do-data-text-lazy-replace-and-data-text-lazy-append-not-work:

> replace (pack "<<name>>") (pack "Joyce") (pack "Hello, <<name>>.") 
"Hello, Joyce."
> replace (pack "<" `append` pack "<name>>") (pack "Joyce") (pack "Hello, <<name>>.")
"Hello, <<name>>."
