Ascii Paint

Ascii-Paint is a simple open source painting program which uses ASCII characters instead of pixels. Ascii-paint was started by Shafqat Bhuiyan & Jice (original site), but was heavily adapted (and now maintained) by Ben Porter.

Ascii-Paint can be used to make ascii art, mockup scenes from roguelikes, or even to make ascii animations, like the following:

  • 2009-2010 Shafqat Bhuiyan & Jice

Download Ascii-Paint by clicking the Downloads tab above. There are a number of versions -- typically you'll want the latest version.

Refer to the README file (in the download, or online here) for instructions on how to use the program, including key bindings etc.

Finally, see the Guide for a short tutorial on how to make your first ascii animation gif. And see the layer tutorial for some help on how to use layers.

The primary site for Ascii-paint is on bitbucket.

Ascii-paint is also being discussed in a number of forums, including: tigsource, blockland, and bay12 forums.
