generated hydrozoa.json, which has about 10 times as many nodes as siphonophorae. Gave it a quick try but the plot was very sluggish. siphonophorae.json has 191 nodes, hydrozoa.json has 2437, all animals would have 366809, and all life would probably have about a million. Will probably have to do some sort of dynamic subsampling to get decent renderings.

have a basic d3 tree viewer up and running in force/ based off of http://mbostock.github.com/d3/ex/force.html

year and itis_id now packed into json nodes

json file is now in d3.json graph format that has nodes and links format. Source and target in links corresponds to index position in nodes. Still need to put year and itis id into nodes. Regenerated siphonophorae.json
