| WELCOME TO VEDIT 6.2 FOR WINDOWS |

This file describes how to install and get started with VEDIT for Windows.

While VEDIT 6.2 is optimized for Windows XP, Vista and Win 7, most features
work perfectly on Windows 98/ME/2000/NT. (However limited technical support
is available when running on a Windows version older than XP.)

TRIAL VERSION: If you are only evaluating VEDIT as a trial version, please
also refer to the file TRIAL-W.TXT. It describes the (few)
limitations of the trial version and how to uninstall it.

VEDIT Pro64: Depending upon which file you downloaded, the Pro64 version
of VEDIT may also be installed. However, unless you
explicitly purchased VEDIT Pro64, it will only run as a trial
version, which limits it to a maximum file size of 500 Megs.
The purchased Pro64 version can edit files over 100+ Gigs.

The Pro64 versions runs as a 32-bit Windows app; it is only
                internally a 64-bit program.

To install VEDIT for Windows, run the "Setup" program as described below.

The same set of files (e.g. downloaded or on CD-ROM) are used to install
VEDIT as a trial version, full product or update.

VEDIT can be installed into any desired directory and requires only about 6
megabytes of disk space. (Optionally installing the VEDIT manuals as Adobe
.PDF files requires an additional 4 megabytes.)

Note: The VEDIT installation is exceptionally clean and will not affect any
other programs. It does not add/overwrite any files in your /Windows
directory, nor does it add/change any system .DLL files. It only
creates the VEDIT Home and User directories, adds a VEDIT Program
group, and makes a minimal number of entries into the registry.

>>> To install the Windows version of VEDIT:

1. If you downloaded VEDIT, e.g. the file vpa-prod.exe or vpw-prod.exe:

    A. Double-click the downloaded .exe file. You may receive a confirmation
or warning to execute a .exe file. Confirm it.

    B. You will receive a welcome window. Press [OK] to begin the

    C. At the next window press [Setup].
-OR- If you have a VEDIT installation CD-ROM:

    A. Insert the VEDIT CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The installation
program will start automatically. If it does not, select the "Run"
command from the "Start" menu. Then enter the following command:

d:\setup (Where "d" is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive).

Alternatively, switch to your CD-ROM using Explorer (or "My
Computer") and double-click the file "setup.exe".

2. VEDIT will then start! Instead of using a traditional installation
program, VEDIT installs itself using a very flexible "macro" which can
transfer your configuration from a previous version, and much more.

3. You can install VEDIT as a trial version, full product or an update.
The installation's built-in help describes the differences.

To enable VEDIT as a full product, you need the 15-digit serial-
registration number supplied when you purchased it. This number can
typically be found on the CD-ROM envelope. If you purchased VEDIT
on-line, a temporary number, good for 10 days, was immediately emailed
to you. The permanent number will be e-mailed to you in a few days.
(We take this extra step to protect from fraudulent on-line orders.)

If you install VEDIT as a trial version, refer to the file TRIAL-W.TXT
for details. You can convert a trial version to the full version by
selecting {HELP, Register VEDIT} and entering the serial-registration
number; you do not have to re-install it.

4. You can install VEDIT into any desired directory. The bulk of the files
are installed in the "VEDIT Home Directory". The default depends upon
which version of Windows is running:

Windows XP Default is c:\vedit, but you may want to use
                        "c:\Program Files\Vedit".

        Vista/Win7 Default is c:\Program Files (x86)\vedit
If you also purchased an EBCDIC conversion package (Level 2, 3 or 4),
we highly recommend installing into c:\vedit as this will make it
easier for you to create the batch files used to automate conversions.

5. If desired, you can also install VEDIT onto a USB drive. When installed
on a USB drive, VEDIT can run from a drive letter different from the
installation drive letter. This lets you easily plug the USB drive into
any computer and immediately run VEDIT without installing it on the host

A USB installation will not affect any VEDIT already installed - no
changes are made to the Windows registry and no icons to the USB VEDIT
    are created.

6. In order to properly support Windows Vista/Win7 (and later), VEDIT's
configuration files are not saved in the VEDIT Home directory, but rather
in the user's Application Data area. This directory is called the "VEDIT
User" directory and is set during the installation process. Depending
upon whether the VEDIT configuration is to be shared among all users, or
be separate for each user, the VEDIT User directory is based on the
environment variables ALLUSERSPROFILE or APPDATA. The exact directory is
    set during installation.

Optionally, all files can be installed into c:\vedit and is preferred by
frequent and experienced users of VEDIT who often want to examine and
modify the many supplied macros. In Vista/Win 7 this requires
Administrator status for both installing and running VEDIT.

7. If either destination (Home or User) directory already exists, the
installation assumes it contains a previous version of VEDIT. You can
then either archive the old version, or just overwrite it. You can also
transfer the configuration from the old VEDIT to the new one. Even if you
choose overwriting, all configuration related files are first copied to
    the ".\OLD" subdirectory.

8. Follow the remaining prompts on the screen. It is easy to later change
any configurations that you now select, such as the color scheme, without
    having to re-install.

We highly suggest selecting the "Normal" keyboard layout which closely
follows Microsoft conventions. Otherwise, commonly used VEDIT functions
will often not be accessible via a "hot-key".

Installation Notes

1. If you are updating from an earlier version of VEDIT, refer to the file
WHATSNEW.TXT for a summary of the enhancements and changes from version
6.0 to 6.2. If you are updating from an older version, also refer to the
    file WHATSNEW.OLD.

The file NEW-CMDS.TXT summarizes recent additions and changes to the
VEDIT macro language. (It it oriented to technical users.)

2. The ERRATA.TXT file lists discrepancies in the printed manuals and
equivalent .pdf files which were written for version 6.0. While
many enhancements have been made since 6.0, most of the VEDIT
"User's Manual" content is also in the built-in help, which is
completely up-to-date. The VEDIT "Macro Language Reference Manual"
is still very accurate; the many new commands are documented in

The section "Don't miss these topics" in the ERRATA.TXT file lists the
important pages that everyone should read. The installation optionally
displays or prints ERRATA.TXT and WHATSNEW.TXT.

3. Refer to section "Getting Started" in the help system for details about
configuring VEDIT and a description of the directories and files.

The help topic "What's New" gives an overview of all changes since 5.16
and includes links to detailed descriptions. The built-in help is
    completely up-to-date.

4. The best way to learn VEDIT is by running the supplied Tutorial. The
tutorial topics are available in the {HELP, Tutorial} sub-menu. They
cover most of the topics in the manual's "Quick Tutorial" and "Editing
    Guide" topics.

5. To optionally associate VEDIT with any desired file-types, select
the menu item {CONFIG, Associate file types}. Once associated, you
can then simply double-click a file to quickly open it in VEDIT.

6. You can uninstall VEDIT with "Add/Remove Programs" in the Windows
Control Panel or with the "VEDIT Uninstall" icon in the VEDIT
    program group.

Running VEDIT

The installation creates the "VEDIT" program group which contains the "VEDIT"
icon. Select this icon to run VEDIT. You may want to make a copy of the VEDIT
icon on your desktop.

You can also open files with VEDIT by dragging and dropping files onto VEDIT
or its icon.

You can associate file types with VEDIT. When you then double-click on a file
of that type, e.g. .TXT, .C, it will automatically open in VEDIT. To
associate file types with VEDIT, select the VEDIT menu function {CONFIG,
Associate file types}.

You can also start up the Windows version of VEDIT from the "command line".
This is any easy way to select invocation options. For example, the command
to open all ".TXT" files in the current directory in browse-only mode is:

        vpw -b *.txt

Select the menu item {HELP, Contents} or press <F1> for extensive built-in
help. The built-in is very extensive (several hundred printed pages
worth). Each dialog box also has extensive context-sensitive help.

Invocation Options

VEDIT has many useful invocation options. The help topic "Starting VEDIT"
describes them in detail. Invocation options are typically specified by
running VEDIT from the command line.

For example, the command to open the file MYFILE.TXT in browse-only mode and
start on line 62 is:

        vpw -b myfile.txt -l620 ("l" is the letter L)

Browsing Files

VEDIT has a special mode for browsing files; this prevents accidental
alterations. In browse mode you can instantly jump to the beginning or end of
the file, or to a relative position in the middle when using the scroll bar
or {Goto} menu. It is particularly useful for browsing huge (100+ Megabyte)

To open a file in browse-only mode, select "[ ] Open as read-only" in the
file-open dialog box.

Or, if you are running VEDIT from a command line, use:

        vpw -b filename

Hex-mode Editing

The function {VIEW, Toggle Hex-mode split} (default: <Alt-=>) makes it easy
to edit a file simultaneously in Hexadecimal and ASCII.

Or press <Alt-D>, the hot-key for {VIEW, Toggle display mode}, six times
to switch the current window into Hex mode. Press it three more times to
restore the normal mode.

Using the Tutorial

VEDIT is supplied with an extensive hands-on tutorial. We suggest that new
users run through the tutorial items which are located in the {HELP,
Tutorial} menu. One window displays directions while you edit sample files.
General editing, programming, word processing, data/binary file editing,
hex-mode editing and much more, are all covered. A quick overview takes about
20 minutes; working through the tutorial step-by-step will take several
hours, but will make you a very proficient VEDIT user.

Changing the Keyboard Layout

The {CONFIG, Keyboard layout} menu lets you change the keyboard layout as
desired. Let the built-in guide you. The "Save layout" function lets you
save the entire keyboard layout as a .KEY file. "Load from disk" lets you
load a complete new keyboard layout at any time. The .KEY files are easily
edited; this gives you another (preferred) method of changing the layout.

To have VEDIT emulate Brief or Wordstar, load the files BRIEF.KEY or
WORDSTAR.KEY by selecting {CONFIG, Keyboard layout, Load from disk}. The
files BRIEF.DOC and WORDSTAR.DOC document these emulations.

Note: The instructions in the Tutorial assume the default keyboard layout.
Therefore, we suggest finishing the Tutorial before changing the
        keyboard layout.

VEDIT Manuals

You can purchase VEDIT with or without a set of two printed manuals. The 448
page "VEDIT 6.0 User's Manual" covers all editing topics. The 304 page "VEDIT
6.0 Macro Language Reference Manual" covers just the programmable macro

The manuals are also available as Adobe .PDF files on our website: (User's Manual) (Macro Language Reference Manual)

Note: The normal installation will install these .PDF files and make them
      available from both the VEDIT Program group, and from VEDIT's {HELP}

All product and update purchases include 3 months of support and additional
downloaded updates. The optional Software Subscription Plan (SSP) adds 15
more months of support and updates, including support thru version 7.1,
whichever is longer.

You can update to any new version released during your support period. In
VEDIT, select {HELP, About} to determine when your support period expires.
For example, if it "Expires at end of 12-2011", then you can install any
version released thru 12/31/2011; you will not be able to install a version
released after that date.
