No way to easily check for new messages on forum index

If you are in a subforum (eg https://www.svcover.nl/forum.php?forum=3) you can clearly see if there is a new message in a thread by a red dot in placed on the talk bubbles icon. However, such a feature is missing on the main index (https://www.svcover.nl/forum.php). This makes it quite hard to see if there are any messages, unless you visit all the subfora, but nobody is going to do that. This way, the forum will die.
