System messages not shown in Messages dialogue

We're using Moodle 3.2 with the Adaptable theme version 1.3.1.1 (2017012300).

System messages are not showing up in the My Notifications dialogue. Also the user doesn't get web notifications about system messages.

For example messages about awarded badges do not show up in the user notifications dialogue.

Everything works as expected when using the Clean Theme.
