Achievements system

Issue #52 new

Gamification is the use of game thinking and game mechanics in non-game contexts to increase users' motivation and involvement. It is useful to make otherwise repetitive tasks more rewarding and engaging.

It would be nice to have an achievements system in Fire, at least for graders but possibly also for students, where the users are awarded achievements (also known as trophies or badges) for accomplishing certain goals. For example, a user could get an achievement for grading a certain number of submissions in a given time, or for writing thorough feedback. Attaining these goals should not be extremely hard, but they should give users a sense of accomplishment after completing them.

Could be nice but comes with complications, e.g. how would you determine thorough feedback?

How about just a progress bar (percentage completed) for the grader? Would also be useful to see what percentage of the students has already passed an assignments and what percentage is still pending / rejected. Getting the passed percentage to 100% is your achievement (and then you can present the corresponding popup..)

Oh, by 'thorough feedback' I meant a very long feedback... of course it could be just a load of rubbish, but in general I don't think a grader would bother to write a lot unless the text is meaningful. In any case, it was just an example and not the gist of the proposal.

The progress bar idea is nice but quite orthogonal to the achievements system (in a way, it would be just a visualisation of your progress towards a particular achievement).

It is already shown on the main page, although not with percents but with actual numbers. Do you think a more graphical presentation would be better?

I am planning to add a red "ungraded" counter somewhere on the top of the page in the next update. It will be red and irritating and craving to be removed (by more grading).
