Disappearing statue

Issue #184 closed
Американский Шпион created an issue

in the beginninh of e2m5a there is a giant statue. Alt-tabbing out from and back in the game can result in disappearing of it and sometimes in disappearing of blockage of the hidden passage.

I can't get this to happen. Are you doing this from a window or fullscreen? In Windows, Linux or Mac? Latest version? What video card? Latest drivers?

If you do "map e2m5a" then start alt+tabbing repeatedly out of the game will it occur?

  2. Американский Шпион reporter

latest windows build, fullscreen, geforce 7100m, intel hd 3000, latest drivers. It can reappear, can disappear again

  3. Frank Sapone

Need to know the exact steps you are doing and possibly the resolution and refresh rate. Also is this from fullscreen or windowed?

  4. Американский Шпион reporter

Ok, seems like I can't reproduce it on nvidia now, only on intel hd 3000. fullscreen, 60hz, 1280x720 go to menu, alt-tab to desktop, alt-tab back, close the menu. done

I have deleted current.cfg and started from "map e2m5a". After some testing here it is: on both GPUs you can open menu, alt-tab back and forth and some random objects disappear with their corresponding sounds if any exists. You can walk around the level and get back with everything restored to it's place. Sometimes aside from disappearing map objects your weapon model can turn invisible. I manage to capture almost everything on one demo. You may also notice, that after several alt-tabs weapon idle animation stops.

Again, this is fullscreen, any resolution, win7 x64, 60hz, default.cfg. I also could not reproduce it on daikatana v1.2

Mara'akate already solved the problem. it was caused by dedicated console.

  7. Frank Sapone

@Knightmare66 no, he says if he does it from within the game then it never happens. I did test 11-29-16 going into a menu and alt+tabbing in and out and I can't reproduce this. I'm thinking it's some sort of memory corruption issue. Maybe from the q3a style window, but we would need linux users to test this bug as well. And if it is memory corruption it may never be fixed considering how large the project is. :/

  8. Frank Sapone

@Knightmare66 has made a small fix to the dedicated console output. This may or may not have been the cause of the issue. There is a new build available, grab it with auto-update and test again and let us know.

    Thanks.

I tried to make this happen in Linux yesterday (under accelerated Gnome 3 Mutter with latest proprietary nVidia drivers for nVidia GTX 960 4GB) but I was not able to reproduce it. I tried to:

    • Alt-tab in-game in e2m5a
    • Open menu while-in game and alt-tab
    • Open up quickconsole and alt-tab
    • Same steps but with alt+enter instead.

...and repeated each one at least couple of times and none of the objects in e2m5a disappeared. I also tried this today in 64-bit Windows 7 on my laptop with Intel HD 4000 and nVidia NVS 5400M but I wasn't able to reproduce it. (I cannot use the latest drivers in my laptop because of nVidia Optimus. So I'm using manufacturer's latest available older HD 4000 and older nVidia drivers in it.)

It would be great if Milkey Wilkey could share the Daikatana config file that he is using.

Also it would be interesting to know whenever or not he has NX-bit (No Execute) enabled in Windows. And what anti-virus he is using.

It does not appears every time, sometimes a had to do it 10 times or more to get the bug, sometimes just 1-3. I also has a laptop with optimus, so I think intel uses stock drivers. config is default and I have anti-virus disabled (avast, by the way). We tracked it down to the version of 06-26-12, one of the latest builds where bug didn't appear. I should also note, that it's easier to reproduce on intel than on nvidia hw. and again, this happens ONLY if alt-tab with menu open. alt+enter or vid_restart does not have any effect. in latest tests also leads to disappearing of sound of a flames without disappearing of flames themselves

Actually just scrap what I wrote half-an-hour ago. I kept trying to glitch this thing and once I enabled NX, the first-time I did alt-tab (I didn't even have to enter the menu) weapon disappeared and won't come back regardless of cl_gun setting, alt-tabbing again, vid_restart or alt+enter. I had to restart the game to make gun visible again. I have a video of it. This was on Intel HD 4000.

Milkey: There is an NX option in Windows itself that controls it (computer properties -> additional properties -> performance -> data execution prevention). Some anti-virus applications enable it for the user and cause all sorts of weird issues in older games relating to how they handle memory. I don't know if NX is the cause but it can be useful in triggering memory bugs sometimes.

Edit: Ok, I've uploaded it. Watch this: https://youtu.be/whw09zUJeBM

I have Win 7 x64 and DEP/NX is already enabled. I also have an Nvidia 960 GTX and I just can't get this bug to happen.

That said, I can post a version without the q3a style console output and see if it fixes the problem for both of you.

  13. Purkkaviritys

@MilkeyWilkey The point was to enable DEP "for all programs and applications except those listed". The default setting in Windows is "only for selected windows files and services". But like I said... I don't know if it is a cause but I've found that it usually causes all sorts of interesting things in older games (when enabled for all programs). If you have that setting in BIOS or UEFI it should be enabled but the setting I'm talking about is found from Windows itself and not from BIOS or UEFI.

@maraakate I've tried several times today to make something disappear when running Daikatana with nVidia card. I've done it in both Windows and in Linux but nothing happens.

However I can at least make the weapon model disappear when running DK on Intel HD 4000 in Windows. But it can take several attempts. If I have DEP limited to only selected Windows files and services nothing happens or at least I haven't seen it happen yet in that mode.

I haven't tried no_q3a_output version yet. But I'll check back once I've done that.

  14. Purkkaviritys

Shit... I still haven't tested if no_q3a_output version will fix it. But I just wanted to let you know that I've managed to start reproducing this issue fairly often on Intel HD 4000 in 64-bit Windows 7 Professional when I...

    1. Open up Daikatana, type into console /map e2m5a.
    2. Walk a little bit.
    3. Press ESC key and flip any menu option at least once.
    4. Alt+tab from the menu
    5. When desktop shows up almost instantly Alt+tab back into the game
    6. Flip menu options at least once.
    7. Press ESC key to go back to the game.
    8. Objects should start disappearing and reappearing randomly.

It might take 2-4 tries but it can trigger a situation where when player looks at any static dkm placed into the map it might disappear and reappear only to disappear again (without pressing alt+tab in between the disappearance and reappearance). I managed to capture this on a video.

I've tried also with nVidia GPUs but I'm still unable to make it happen with them. But I can confirm on my end that this bug definitely exists and is reproducible.

  15. Frank Sapone

Okay. Try doing gl_ext_multitexture 0 and restarting the game. Does it still do it?

If so also try gl_vertex_arrays 0 and restart the game. I wonder if it has anything to do with the updated multexturing and vertex array code @Knightmare66 did to improve performance on intel integrated cards.

Also, has anyone tested this on 7 x86 or XP x86 or XP x64?

But yes, please test the new binary and let me know. But this sounds more like it would be stemming from the model caches being wiped from entering the menu. We'll see. :S

  16. Frank Sapone

Also, I don't believe his config file is anything unique because when we tested very old versions from 2012 he was deleting the configs each time to be certain nothing was conflicting.

  17. Американский Шпион reporter

@Purkkaviritys you can even capture it in the demo like did I. and yes, I did exatly what you said with DEP

  18. Frank Sapone

@Knightmare66 has moved the initialization code for the q3a output console later in the code. I have pushed a new auto-update, upgraded to this build and let me know if the problem still persists.
