Intermittent Unhandled Exception crashes in first level

Issue #257 closed
Keith McCallon created an issue

I’m getting Unhandled Exception errors that cause a crash to desktop in the first level. The first time it happened was right after after loading a new part of the level, but it’s happened in other places. I’m on Windows 10, and updated to the latest version of the patch.

    Hi Keith,

Are you using the 64-bit patch? If so try the 32-bit version. For some reason we are getting crashes for a small sample of users from the 64-bit version but none of us have been able to reproduce it or find a common cause. My guess would be a virus scanner, video card driver, or game overlay (ie steam/twitch/discord).

    Hi Frank,

Thanks for the fast response. Yeah, I’m using the 64-bit patch. I may have fixed the problem, though. I tried starting a new game, and everything seems to be working fine. I did change the save crystal settings while playing before, along with trying a few other options. Maybe it was something with that? I was overwriting the same save file, and when I started a new game I deleted that. Not using any overlay with the game, though.

I’ve been unable to figure out how or why this crash happens and only for a very small sample of users. When I made the 64-bit patch me and 3 other community users tested the game multiple times back and forth until completion over 3-4 months and didn’t find any issues. I’m not sure what causes it as nobody has been able to give us exact steps to reproduce it. The crash log is near useless, but I’m guessing if it’s not something overwriting memory from external sources then there is something wrong with a data size in the 64-bit conversion and I have not found it and it must be subtle and occurs over a period of time.

If the info helps, I noticed it the first time right when the next part of a level loaded. After that it seemed to happen after playing for a certain amount of time, maybe a minute or two. Pretty sure it wasn’t some action I did in the game or location I was in or anything. I’m gonna keep playing through the game, so I’ll let you know if I encounter it again.
