Do you guys provide tools or info for new translations?

Issue #261 new
George Hovhannisian created an issue

So, there are 2 unofficial/pirated Russian translations for Daikatana. Since they were translated and released without any permission from Ion Storm or Eidos, they are currently free to distribute. The problem is they are both based on version (earlier than?) v1.0, and as such require replacing the executable along with the dll directory to see Russian text in menus and what not. So, a full translation cannot be used together with the v1.3 patch. As far as I understand, v1.3 redirects all such text to standalone dlls. So I was wondering if you guys provide any tools to create such dlls for other languages? My bad, I remembered this was a thing, but couldn’t find it this time around. Just my stupidity, found it already.

Another tool, I’m interested in is one that can read Daikatana wal files. There are dozens of tools out there that support Q2 wal files, yet the only one I know with Daikatana support is daiwal. I have 2 different builds of daiwal, and I tried using both to convert all wal files to bmp (to see if there’s any text that would need translation), but neither can read any of the textures in e2dm2 (“Read beyond end of file” error), otherwise there’s a handful of textures that do get converted, however incorrectly (just a garbage of pink pixels). Provided, there’s probably nothing to translate for dm map textures, I thought I’d still mention it.

A third tool I’m looking for is one that can create/edit Daikatana font (*.dkf) files. One of the translations changes the dkf files, the other one uses an ass-backwards approach, and straight up replaces Latin characters in the bmp fonts with Cyrillic ones. As such the subtitles for that translations are not human-readable, and I’m planning to compare both translation, since one of them has superior voice acting, while the other one has more subtitles and textures translated. Also, do we know which subtitle/voiceover files are actually used in the game? I’m asking, because one of the translations replaces a lot of files with dummies, while the other one has them translated.

I was also wondering if you guys have or can provide original textures for the game? I’m not looking for all textures, obviously, but only those that contain English text. I’ve attached a list of all textures that I found containing English text. I’m not sure if any other localization translates map textures, and if they didn’t I’d prefer to skip that headache myself, however, I still think that some of the textures must be translated (i.e. “Death to Hiro“, some nameplates, and such). Even though my list contains textures that are just Mishima logos, those possibly should be skipped.

    Hi George,

We I actually updated the SDK version this morning for you to work with your Russian Translation. We may need to re-adapt a font to work with your translation. We can help with this if you make good progress.

Regards to the textures that have english text… I don’t know. You would have to extract them and see.

I’ll take a look over the weekend on how the fonts are made. There is a tool for this but I don’t remember how it works.

Hi George, totally forgot about this issue. But you need a special tool called dkfont (an internal tool ION made) that I can provide you that generates the DKF if you’d like.

For some files, it’s only WAL. But I believe all the interesting HUD stuff was in TGA files. The dev drive doesn’t have the original PSD files or whatever they may have been.

The only other standing issue I can think of is the scancode mapping. Currently, I don’t believe the API I wrote for the language DLLs actually changes the scancode layout. That would need fixed, and also you’d have to make that scancode layout in order for it to be useful.

If you’re still interested in all of this let me know and I can supply you the tools and work with you on getting the scancode layout stuff working as well.
