Missing sounds in 1.3

Issue #35 new
Purkkaviritys created an issue

Sometimes there are missing sound files which I think I can hear in 1.2 but which are not present at 1.3. I haven't made an exhaustive list of them all but the most noticeably missing ones are:

  • voices/Misc/sid_s_25.mp3
  • voices/superfly/sid_s_52a.mp3
  • voices/mikiko/sid_m_52b.mp3
  • voices/mikiko/e4m2_sf_02c.mp3

Those are missing both in my Linux 1.3 version and the Windows 1.3 full package version. And I know that there are more of them but it didn't occur to me to report them as bugs until much later. When I next time play the game through I'll hunt them down.

Please provide a list of maps where these sounds are missing. The map sources we have to work with are all from v1.0, so some bugfixes/changes will have to be re-applied to match v1.2.

Ok. I can try. But after playing 100 hours of Daikatana with the patch 1.3 as it is now I have to take a break from it at some point. lol

I probably can. But it's not going to happen soon. There are also sound related trigger issues and I'm keeping and eye for them. For example when in e1m6c... player goes through door and first time enter the room where the Mikiko is being held, Superfly in version 1.2 comments a moment later "Hey, there's your girl!". But that didn't always happen to me in 1.3 until I realised that in that starting point of e1m6c Superfly occasionally just runs through the trigger towards the monsters in room and won't say the line. But after the monsters in the room are cleared and player returns to the trigger point, when Superfly steps on it he says those lines. I'm unable to confirm it right now but I guess that trigger in 1.2 is at slightly different position further inside in the room and not immediately at the door step.

Edit: Let me also add that in e1m6c when you noclip there's a room that's not connected to anything the map and it's been textured with a black texture where a text "trigger" is all over it. I don't fully understand the purpose of it. I guess it's development relic of some kind.

While I we were investigating that other issue I should probably add here that Mikiko doesn't do "This Waterway is our ticket out, just gotta open it up now." statement in E4M2a when coming the final turn down. I I can see the subtitle but I can hear no audio.

Little bit further down I can see note about missing audio file and missing subtitle file.

It happens even when I have the updated maps now.

It's going to happen with the updated maps because the sources are based on v1.0 since this was all that was available on the development hard drive backup supplied by Romero. There are other small chatter soundbytes like this that are missing. If you find them please report them.

There are two triggers for "We'll stay here" comments from Mikiko and Superfly in this map. The v1.0 map source has these paths wrong (leaving out "sounds/"). Also, there are several mp3 files triggered by the nodes that work correctly in Windows. The folders for the Superfly and Mikiko voices are however, capitalized, while the references in the nodes are all lowercase. Caedes says he has a fix for this.

I added a fix in the 01-18-15 build that will check sidekick mp3s to see if it has the sounds/ path in it, if not it will patch the path name. A fair amount of sounds should now play, but there a few that are linked wrong (i.e. wants to play a mikiko specific file but points to a superfly sound directory). Please report these missing ones.

Mikiko's noise that she makes upon being freed from her jail cell in icelab is missing/not linked correctly. With the most recent build before this one

Since the switch to Windows OpenAL it will tell you if sounds are unable to load without requiring developer CVAR to be set. I have noticed there are some in episode 3 maps on load that will complain... like global/skullaamb.wav. This may be leftovers from early revisions of those maps as this file does not exist on the 1999 builds either.

There are still missing sounds in the Daikatana 1.3. One such sound I just tested for is when after killing Wyndrax and descending down the staircase in e3m4b there's a line which I recall Mikiko saying but the error is that Superfly sound file failed to open and play. This sound definitely works in DK 1.0 release. I can check which one of the two sidekicks says it later today.

"there's a ton of missing voice files in e1m6. if you "use" one of the workers in the icelabs, they supposed to speak their names. the path they address is sounds/e1/voc/wrkxxx.mp3 here's all of the files http://dropmefiles.com/DMW57 password g1ltl0"

File is deleted. What are the files supposed to be, is it the sounds\voices\Misc\e1m6_ds_xx files?

e3m1c is fixed. e4m1b also complained about a missing sound after you placed the bomb and got near the ladder climbing part. That was a purposeful missing sound, because corrected it would have had the sidekicks say "we'll stay here" so we removed that sound trigger otherwise it would have made no sense.

The e1m6 worker files are interesting, but they're more like placeholder sounds and the it's the game guy doing every voice so we won't be including those.

Earlier there was a mention of e4m2a about "this waterway is a our ticket out..." that was fixed a good while ago when I fixed problems with the AI nodes that have sound triggers.

I haven't looked at e3m4b. I did replay the game recently and didn't see a complaint during a playthrough of that map, but I did blaze through it so I'll look again.
