Gods are wrathful despite many employed temples, and their wrath does nothing

With a population under 500 and three temples to each of the five gods, I was repeatedly getting messages about angry gods and their wrath (each message being cut off after the first line and thereby not readable) and then their wrath actually never seemed to do anything.
