Use the base point label or specify a string to generate the new point labels

Issue #566 closed
Ronan Le Tiec created an issue

When I create a pattern piece, i just want the labels to be automatically named after a specifical label + a number, for instance A1, A2, A3 etc. It is already happening automaticaly, however I can't specify which letter or string the label are starting with by default.

Or maybe there is a dialog to do it and i didn't find it?

My problem specificaly is that on my system (Ubuntu 16.04 in German, but i use Valentina in English), the default letter for the second pattern piece I create is always an Ä. I'd rather have B for the second pattern piece. So I change the label of the pase point, but all the next labels I create have automaticaly the Ä in it (Ä1). I change those to B manually everytime. Then for the third piece, the system uses B as a default letter, but as I already have it, i'd prefer to have C and so the problem goes on.

My proposition would be either to use the label of the base point to generate automatically default name for the next labels, or to be able to specify a string somewhere.

Go to File->Preferences->tab Configuration->combobox Label language.

Thanks for tipp. It solved the specific problem that I had.

However I still think the proposal shouldn't be closed and should be discussed.

For instance if a user would like to have another letter for a pattern piece than the one suggested, it would be nice to be able to influence the generated default labels, otherwise the user have to edit them everytime by hand.

It's not a very important issue and there are much more important features that have to be done. But I think it could be done / discussed in the future.

And for the german language, I think that Ä shouldn't be the second letter for the pattern piece by default. Ä is just a variation of A, B should be the second letter proposed.

This issue request a feature which enables the user to specify the base letter used to generate point labels in a new patternpiece, or perhaps even for generating point labels in an existing patternpiece after the new letter is selected. Is this feature possible?

The user was given a temporary solution, which was to change their preferred language. Should this be issue be closed?

My official position is simple. We will not continue improvement of automatic label generation in this direction. The main purpose of this system was automatically propose valid name for a user, not more, not less. Any additional settings goes against this goal.

Theoretically this shouldn't be hard to develop, but because this is open source project each can propose a feature we won't to develop. And i guarantee very high possibility changing my mind when i will see how it will work not in theory, but rather in code.

That's right, it could be done for instance in the dialog of the base point. The default prefix could be the one that is being used at the moment.

The main purpose of this system was automatically propose valid name for a user, not more, not less.

I'm not sure if the purpose of proposing a valid name is reached if i have to change every single label by hand in case i want to use a different base letter. Because a valid name would be a name that i'll actually use.

but because this is open source project each can propose a feature we won't to develop

I agree with that,, but before deciding if a feature should be developed or not, it's good to discuss a little bit and maybe it will help if the issue is still opened.

I think this feature is a small improvement, I was a bit annoyed when editing my pattern to have to change every label. But the priority is not very high, because the labels can be edited so there not a very strong need.

You can't agree with me because doesn't know history of this feature. The purpose was reached, because user free from creating name manually each time adds new point. Especially when a user doesn't care about a name.

By closing this ticket i only show you that i personally will not develop this feature.

So can we leave this issue open in case someone else wants to work on it in the future?

In the issue tracker i want to see only task that i am personally agree with. Because in the end i don't have any guarantee that someone except the team will implement it. All i can propose is to mark it on hold.

The rules of an open source community say that in such cases you have two options:

    • Develop the feature yourself and make a pull request.
    • Carma. Be part of the community and in this case the core team will hear you more attentive.

If you want to continue discussion about this feature the forum is better place. Not many people will see your comments here. Right now your voice is not enough to change my mind.

    It sounds good to me.

All right, first the discussion should take place in the forum, and then if you agree with it or someone else want to implement it, then it comes in the issue traker. Sorry that i posted this thread as an issue then, i should have put it in the forum first.
