On installation esl-sfetch fails due to presence of illegal characters

I'm trying to install Metannotate and I've run across the issue that esl-sfetch cannot index the Refseq.fa file created in the last part of the installation due to the presence of "illegal characters." Closer examination of the file revealed the presence of amino acid sequences with stop codons present (the "*" character). It looks like hmmer also cannot handle these characters. Much as I hate the idea of removing sequences simply for the presence of stop codons, perhaps sequences containing them should be removed at the cleanDatabase.pl step?
