Numeric format speed

Some numeric formats, including the current one based on %g, are much slower than the %e format (several microseconds versus about 1). Consider using %e for speed, but note that this is less human readable and can take more space.

    Note: seems to be the # specifier to eliminate trailing zeros. Could this be done faster?
