Video keeps playing in the background if user clicks out of modal window (Moodle 4.4)

Issue #205 resolved
Richárd Major created an issue

I’ve known this issue since Moodle 3.9.

Unfortunately it still persists through this day. I saw the other posts being marked as resolved so i wanted to try with the latest moodle and plugin versions to see it for myself.

If you have modal window animation and video appearance set to be embedded the pop-up animation works fine, but if you close the window by clicking outside of it the audio keeps playing in the background.

Moodle version: Moodle 4.4 (Build: 20240422)

Tiles Version: 4.4.0.2 (2024050300)

Hi Richárd please can you outline exactly what activity type you used for this issue, and the source of your video?

As there are multiple ways to embed video in a page it’s not always easy to keep track of this e.g. URL activity set to “embed” pointing out to a YouTube video, MP4 uploaded as a file resource, label with YouTube embed code, section description with embedded code etc. Thanks

    Hi David!

    Sure!

I've used URL activity with a link from our video streaming server to embed a video inside a course.

I've attached some screenshots of the settings and the outcome that may be helpful.

It is harder to replicate on newer versions (both moodle & the plugin) but not impossible. I've observed that if you start the video after the modal opens and click away/out of the modal window immediately you will get the video playing in the background (audio).

    +Info that might be important.

If my observation is correct, if you use the tile course format with "Use sub tiles for activities" checked (and the url activity is not in the heading section but in a numbered section of the course), you will get the same result of modal window popup but the video starts instantly instead of waiting for the user to click the play button. That little info may play a little part of the solution hopefully. The video playing in the background issue exists in both scenarios, but if you use the tiles for activities too, you will get an easier time replicating of the problem.

Thanks for that useful information Richárd. I believe I have a fix for that. I will test further and should go into the next release.
