sim setup should automatically set up the machine for common OSes
There are instructions at https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Simplified_Tutorial_for_New_Users for users to configure simfactory for common operating systems when their machine is not recognised by SimFactory. This logic should be implemented in sim setup instead, so that users can use the ET out of the box on supported OSes.

#2059more or less does this. On "common OS" most things do work (as long as pkg-config is present) and Steve has a python script to detect what needs to be installed. This naturally is a chicken-and-egg problem since one of the things required to be installed is python2.

My belief is that, with the recent enhancements to generic.cfg, this ticket is obsolete.

Simfactory's setup-silent, together with the instructions in the tutorial https://nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/nds-org/jupyter-et/blob/master/CactusTutorial.ipynb are now sufficient to make the ET compile and run on common OS, ie various flavouors of GNU/Linux as well as OSX+MacPorts.
OSX+Homebrew is not currently supported by the ET.
