The issue is, neither Chrome nor Safari supports MathML, which breaks the rendering of equations in Einstein Toolkit documentation. Instead they support MathJax.
Following a separate discussion with Roland, he points out there is a “hybrid” TeX>HTML conversion option that would support both MathJax & MathML:
if we had a new enough htlatex (which we likely don't) then one can get a hybrid: https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/68962
For reference here is the same snippet but rendered in Chrome (84.0.4147.89).

Some more background information: Wikipedia has a list of browsers supporting MathML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MathML) Chrome did support MathML at one point but phased it out https://www.cnet.com/news/googlesubtractsmathmlfromchromeandangermultiplies/
Our server is that generates the HTML pages (from the release branch) is indeed too old to produce mathjax files. It can however produce files that render all equations as images.
