Without any more details, I can only guess you are trying to load invalid ROM files or files using an unsupported compression format (like 7z or RAR).. or using original video mode when your TV does not support it
I can only advise you to read the FAQ here: http://code.google.com/p/genplus-gx/wiki/FAQ

I am asking you about the exact file name, including file extension.
sorry but what's the difference between freezing and hanging for you ? seems exactly the same to me. The question was "Can you return to menu when you got the black screen ?"

After loading the game, return to main menu and press "INFO" button (bottom right corner of the screen). What infos are you seeing there ? Does it display the game name correctly ?

It's very likely a video mode issue then, try changing it to interlaced or progressive in emulator video settings.

What's the name of the file you are trying to load ? Can you return to menu when you got the black screen ? What version of HBC are you using ?
