Soul Star (Mega CD) stage 2 mission briefing is garbled.

Issue #360 resolved

Original issue 360 created by vaguerant on 2013-09-16T13:58:44.000Z:

Soul Star seems to occasionally become glitched on genplus-gx (running r812 here). After playing through the first stage (that's one open space section, a brief planet surface section, followed by another brief space section), the mission briefing begins for the second stage with garbled graphics (sound is fine).

The briefing should look roughly like the first, with an in-game screen in the center of the image displaying the objectives in faux-vector graphics. Attached are a genplus-gx savestate of the issue along with its associated screenshot to demonstrate the issue. The entire screen seems to have scrolled to the left somewhat, looping back around from the right with some significant glitching.

If necessary, I can also provide a save state from the end of the first stage, before the bug actually shows itself.

I've also experienced a different bug when opening the Options menu from the title screen: sometimes the text is in an entirely black palette (against very dark green)instead of the correct orange, making it essentially illegible. Opening and closing the Options menu rapidly seems to trigger this on about one in five attempts.

A savestate before that scene would indeed helps, internal game saves (if possible) through a copy of .brm file also.

I reproduced the bug in option menu, it seems to be caused by some timing discrepancies but I am not sure it doesn't also happen on real hardware. Anyone that could test it ?

Here's a save state from right at the end of the first stage. The ship will fly into the docking bay, then an FMV of it transforming will play. After this FMV, the mission briefing begins.

From this save state I'm able to achieve both a working briefing and a glitched one. Allowing the FMV to play through naturally (it's very short, maybe five seconds) results in the briefing appearing as expected. Skipping the FMV using the Start button results in the glitched version.

Unfortunately, Soul Star doesn't seem to save progress, so save states are the only option.

This was caused by some desync between Main-CPU and SUB-CPU, it has been fixed in r834
