Configurable settings for ntsc filter

Issue #365 resolved
Former user created an issue

Original issue 365 created by joepogo80 on 2013-11-20T20:44:58.000Z:

Is there a way to set or toggle configurable settings for the ntsc filter resolution, and saturation, color bleed etc like blarrgs nes filter does? I believe he has a custom preset for the filter alongside the other 3 presets.

Yes, default presets can be overriden. But are there really any benefits using custom presets instead of preconfigured setups or is it just because you like the idea of playing with knobs to "see what it does" ?

Honestly, i have no idea what some of those settings do (apart from the most obvious ones off course, like saturation, hue, brightness, etc... which can better be controlled through your TV setup anyway) and always felt the default setups were fine for what this filter is used.

Thanks for the reply eke. Yes it is more than playing with knobs. Allowing for us to toggle some of the ntsc settings allows to sharpen or lessen the resolution, color bleed, the original 3 presets are fine, but allowing for a custom preset gives the user a little more control for the custom slot, things like hue and saturation are fine and more along the lines of the tv settings. The five settings are:

    1.) Resolution
    2.) Color bleed
    3.) Sharpness
    4.) artifacts
    5.) fringing

Allowing for a fourth preset with these settings togg-able can allow the user to sharpen or lessen the overall quality of the image among other things.

This basically just adds to the experience and since tvs differ these options allow us to get the ntsc filter settings we want on our tvs as well as allowing us to set the filter to how we remember the games looking. Some liked the dark and gritty image, others like the clean high resolution look if you catch my drift. :)

i know which settings can be configured, it's right there in the code, my question was more if there was reallly visual changes when changing them and what each of them exactly mean and affects.

what does fringing and artifacts mean ?
what effect has the resolution setting when the input and output number of pixels are fixed ?
how does the color bleeding parameter actually affect color bleeding, it's either there or not there to me but more or less color bleeding does not make sense to me ? do you see any differences when changing this ?

yes you see a good difference visually when toggling these settings. For instance, try lowering the resolution value and setting the artifacts and fringing high, and then try setting the resolution to high and setting fringing, artifacts and sharpness high. The default settings for the ntsc filter are good, but we can really make the image shine with these parameters.

try messing with them, you will notice big differences in the image output. :) Its just another thing to add to the many robust features of this superb emulator of yours eke. :)
