Continued Wii/U Support?

Issue #449 wontfix
Immortallix created an issue

Hello, Are there any plans to update the Wii version? Other Wii emulators support overclocking of vWii on the Wii U so I'm wondering if that could be possible with GX, or if you'd have any interest in just creating a version solely to run on the Wii U instead. I know there's many retroarch ports on Wii U that use the Genesis Plus core, but I find Genesis Plus GX app to be much more intuitive and simple while retaining advanced features. Was also wondering if there could be support for USB or bluetooth controllers in such an update?

The Wii/Gamecube version is still updated from time to time, following general emulation improvements that are common to all ports (last commit was one or two months ago I think), it's just that, with kids, work, etc... I have much less free time than before to code on this emulator (and I am also less motivated/interested after all these years maintaining this emulator by myself to be fully honest).

Regarding vWii overclocking, as far as I know, it is just a matter of patching existing .dol with tools made available (I think ?) and/or using a custom loader/firmware so there is no 'real' support to be added in emulators, at least there is no source code modifications involved to 'add overclock support in vWii'. That said, I am not sure why you would need it for this emulator considering all games are already running full speed on Wii, so I guess those 'other Wii emulators' that support overclocking on vWii are only the few emulators that were running too slow on Wii (Wii64 and WiiSX for example).

Regarding a WiiU standalone version, I don't have a WiiU myself so there are no chances for this to happen on my side but, as usual, the whole sourcecode is out there for the Wii version so anyone could take a pick and made it happen if they really want to. I guess the WiiU homebrew scene is either too much limited or not so much interested if this still didn't happened after all these years.

As for USB or bluetooth controllers support, I don't know any Wii emulators that support these (maybe Retroarch supports USB HID devices but I'm not sure it ever really worked on the Wii version) so I would have zero idea how to add this, sorry.

Thanks for the response! I didn't realize Wii updates were in the commits, I was looking at the downloads section with the last Wii version from 2015, I'll check out the new one.

Snes9x GX's upscaling filters benefit from the overclock so I wasn't sure if that was a possibility for Genesis, but yes the games do run pretty much flawlessly as is.

With the Wii U homebrew scene, it is pretty dry in terms of interest, though everyone just makes a Retroarch port which I find to be a bit of a pain to use. Same deal with switch despite the much more active scene. Which is why I love Genplus GX so much, I think its a fantastic UI.

I understand though, I'm actually surprised you're active on here despite how old the project is, that's cool to see.
