Mono sound output [optional]

Issue #76 resolved
Former user created an issue

Original issue 76 created by SonicXxRush on 2010-04-18T13:45:21.000Z:

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Start up Genesis Plus GX.
2.Load any game that has stereo sound.
3.Listen

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Mono sound, I get stereo but I only have a mono television.
Going to the Wii and switching the sound from Stereo to Mono in the Wii
options doesn't fix this, and there is no stereo to mono sound option on
the emulator.

What version of the emulator are you using?
1.3.1 (GUI Version, public release doesn't give mono either)

Is there a way to fix this? Because MUSHA doesn't have full sound from
this, and I can't be the only one with a mono TV with this emulator right?

This is perfectly normal and is not a bug: the Wii is outputting stereo (i.e separated left & right audio channels) by default and so do all existing emulators or homebrew applications.

The Wii settings only affects the System Menu but an idea would be to output sound in mono (i.e mixing left & right channels) if this setting is detected in system menu config file.

I had no idea about just how significant stereo was compared to Mono till I played Crue Ball the other day and found out my right speaker cable is dodgy. No sound effects on the right side of the stage played and the more complex sound effects for stuff like the Head Bangers sounded wrong. I would definitely appreciate this function, even if it ends up making it sound RF cable quality (I dont notice much difference since I havent used a real MD in years but other people that have tell me RF is really inferior from inputting such).

If you are connected to speakers, better solution is to get stereo to mono y-cable, no need to do with software what can easily be done by hardware, right ?

I also guess this is still true for mono TV, just connect y-cable from wii stereo output to TV audio input.

I am even wondering if this "issue" should not just get closed, which i probably will unless someone give me a valid reason to make the emulator mix stereo channels itself (which add useless computation btw and more complications than it's worth).

Doesn't just sticking with one cable on a Mono TV mean you won't be able to hear a lot of sound effects/parts of music? I dunno, I don't own one myself.

How did the actual Genesis/Mega Drive handle this sort of thing?

I am talking about using a cable that mix 2 inputs (stereo) into one (mono), some kind of Y cable. In this case, Left & Right channels are mixed and you hear both. I don't know what kind of connection the original poster is using on his mono TV though.

Mega Drive model 1 outputs mono (stereo channels are mixed internally) on the A/V connector and stereo on the headphone jack.

Mega Drive model 2 outputs stereo AND mono on the A/V connector, and there is no headphone jack anymore.

    See here: http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/genesisav.htm

So basically, both models are able to ouput stereo AND mono, this is actually the only valid reason I see to keep this idea as open, but having to handle mono or stereo on every sound samples frame is not very efficient, especialy when you think than most TV nowadays are able to handle stereo sound.

Just scratch that as this is worthless and I won't implement it.

Well, can you provide some source code for monomix output then? (without option in GUI) I try to apply it and compile. This thing for me important as hell.

If you are so desperate about that (you know many md games does not even use stereo panning, right ?), I am sure you can change speaker configuration in windows devices parameters to output sound in mono on your computer.

Yeah, i know about games without stereo panning.

I have headphones (and integrated Realtek HD 892) And can't find ways to change stereo to mono, even in windows registry not found anything. -_-

If you help me with this feature, i check all SMD romset for you.
