pnetcdf vs. parallel netcdf

When ploughing through the CMake files, I was a little confused when it comes to the netCDF configuration. For example, MOAB's FindNetCDF.cmake tries to find PnetCDF if MPI is enabled. To clarify, there is netCDF (which also has a parallel I/O mode) and then there's a different piece of software, PnetCDF. The code bases are unrelated.

Q: Does MOAB require the logic "for serial use netCDF, for parallel use PnetCDF", or can MOAB also use netCDF's own parallel mode?

Moab does not use parallel netcdf, it uses pnetcdf and serial netcdf

MOAB only supports pnetcdf and not the MPI-enabled NetCDF interfaces. Probably could be a future addition.
