Spirit points need to give boosts to the team controlling them, and probably characters standing on them. Currently they are nothing else than an extra objective at the end of the map after killing all the enemies - and a boring one too: Instead of getting the "Victory" text, you have to walk around the map for 5-10 turns, then get the victory message.

Maybe some damage boost while standing on them, and each spirit point giving health regen or additional HP to all members of the team controlling it. This means that AI gains bonuses too.
