Dolfin-convert saves surfaces in R^3 as 2D meshes

Consider the attached file Cylinder.msh created by gmsh. Running dolfin-convert on it generates a 2D mesh, which is then plotted as

However, if I manually edit the generated Cylinder.xml changing line 4 from

  <mesh celltype="triangle" dim="2">

to

  <mesh celltype="triangle" dim="3">

the mesh is now correct and it is plotted as

Could you try with https://github.com/nschloe/meshio? We'd like to deprecate dolfin-convert.

meshio works fine for the case above!

Thanks for reporting, but marking as 'won't fix' because we want to move to meshio and it does seem to work.
