Fantastic project.

Over the course of the past years, I've always been looking for good-quality open-source meshing solutions with tools like gmsh didn't provide the usability. mshr is certainly in a strong spot.

To increase popularity of mshr even more, I believe it would be beneficial to emancipate it from Dolfin and allow for other output types. A while ago I started plugging together I/O routines for a bunch of mesh types in meshio – DOLFIN's XML and XDMF being two of them –, and perhaps it'd be useful to hook those up with mshr.

I'm not sure right now what would be needed on the meshio side, but I'm certainly willing to invest time in this. What do you think?
