Dolby True HD Passthru

Issue #423 new
Steve Grenier created an issue

When adding tracks, there's no option to allow Dolby TrueHD tracks to passthru. It would be nice to add this in the future. Not sure if there is a way to do it manually.

I usually stick with formats supported by Apple. Conversion to EAC3 could be a nice idea.

It is a very good idea if you have an ATV, a TV or an A/V receiver that supports eac3.

and maybe when ATMOS is support by apple we could transfer the meta data from TrueHD Atmos to Dolby Digital Plus Atmos.

Indeed. Netflix already has some TV shows in this format.

Are you aware of any conversion tool other than Dolby's media encoder that can spit out eac3 from ThueHD?

Hi guys, I am new here 🙂 Just wanted to comment on this post that SONOS is launching a new soundbar (ARC) which supports HDMI eARC connection and Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3). Actually supports TrueHD also… Would be lovely to have EAC3 enabled (if it is technically doable) in order to be able to play Dolby Atmos… I usually keep AAC/AC3 5.1 since I own a Playbar and it does not support Atmos nor has HDMI connection, but now that SONOS ARC has been announced, I can't wait… lol (Hey, Apple supports Sonos products haha)

Thanks a lot Damiano Galassi and every developer putting huge amount of work and effort on this program, I simply love it! Thanks a lot!

I researched years ago why TrueHD cannot passthru and what I found was that the MP4 container does actually support TrueHD. The issue is really that no one has taken the time to implement whatever is needed by FFPMEG to encode TrueHD into a MP4 container. I think the argument at the time had to do with the fact that no hardware vendors supported TrueHD inside of an MP4 container, therefore no reason to support in FFPMEG. I don’t think there has been much traction since.

I am able to play mp4 + thd (Dolby True HD) using a Sony tv A95k oled. I used FFworks https://www.ffworks.net/ to encode a mp4 conatiner with THD DTS EAC3 audios then used subler to add a Dolby Vision stream to that mp4 and all played seamlessly. However, TV needs to support earc with THD & DTS passthrough capabilities and a soundbar that can decode THD & DTS needs to be connected to enjoy the perfection.

FFworks is paid software and offer only 5 enodings. Would be nice if someone can port Dolby True HD passthrough in subler. @Damiano Galassi
