New 4k tags prevent movies from being shown on apple tv 4k's computers app

Unfortunately, even though the new tags show up fine in the TV app on catalina, those movies tagged with 4k do not appear in the computers app for apple tv 4k so it is impossible to play them through home sharing to apple tv.

I wonder if the Apple TV’s “Computers” app needs updating to accept 4K tagged files - they seem to tag correctly in Catalina’s “TV” app.

“Computers” needs updating - its artwork is haphazard. Some portions of the user interface appear complete... Home Videos, for instance, displays artwork horizontal. Others haven't begun to change at all. Movies are displayed vertically and are partially cut off when viewing Unwatched. Square Television Show artwork is cut off, too, when viewing. Television Shows are a mix of old and new... in some places artwork is square; in others horizontal. Playlists are now horizontal.

Now matter how one chooses to display artwork in the Mac TV app, it looks funny and disjointed on the Apple TV.

    I digress…

Again, perhaps the 4K tag issue is with the “Computers” app on the Apple TV.

The problem is exactly the same on the sharing section of the new TV app on iOS13 so I don’t think the problem come from the app “computer”

No… it’s not the Apple TV app “Computer”.

Is anyone familiar with iFlicks? I don’t care for it… it remuxes an entire movie rather that just changing it’s metadata. iFlicks is able to tag a movie as 4K. It plays on the Apple TV and displays a 4K icon.

I hope this helps lead to a fix for whatever is going on.

It is not iflicks that creates a 4k tag when a movie is running. It is a function of apple tv to display 4k when a 4k movie is playing and you drag down the information slide over card. Must be a function of auto detection kicking in, it will also display an hdr tag if the movie is encoded with hdr. However when the movie is stopped, the movie page will only display the tag the movie is tagged with in metadata.

Thank you for the latest Subler update!

"4k" is not set automatically anymore because the AppleTV won't stream mp4 with such metadata.

The app iFlicks is able to tag movies as 4K… and these movies play on the Apple TV in the Computers app. How is it able to do this?

  6. Vasily reporter

Like I posted before, apple tv can display 4k and hdr tags during playback of the movie simply by identifying the file parameters. However, metadata is used for tags when the file is not playing, therefore a 4k file tagged with 1080/720p will display an HD tag when the movie is selected from library (before playback begins). Once playback starts and you bring down information panel, it will display a 4k.

iFlicks is not doing anything do display 4k tags during playback!

  7. David VH

Yes, Vasily. I’m aware that a 4K symbol does not appear until a movie is played. Look at the picture I posted six days ago on November 4. That is a movie tagged by iFlicks.

When Subler tags a movie as 4K, the movie does not appear in the Computers app on an Apple TV. A 4K symbol does appear in the Catalina TV app.

When iFlicks tags a movie as 4K, the movie does appear in the Computers app on an Apple TV. It then displays a 4K symbol when played.

Once more, the point is that when Subler tags a movie as 4K, it does not appear in the Computers app on an Apple TV. It reappears when it is retagged as something other than 4K.

My point is that iFlicks does not actually tag it as 4k. You see a 4k tag during playback only, which is a function of apple tv itself. Even if I tag a 4k movie as SD in subler, during playback apple tv will display a 4k tag.

A true HD/4k metadata tag should change the file name to either HD, 1080p HD or 4k and display the tag inside the movie card (before playback is started). Unfortunately, for now, tagging it with 4k makes files invisible in apple tv/ios.

Another way to look at this…

Create a Smart Playlist… Check Match “all media” and choose “is 4K” and “is true”. Uncheck “Limit to” and check “Live Updating”.

With Subler 15.5.21 tag a 4K movie 4K… next to “HD Video”. In the Finder it will appear with a (4K) suffix.

The movie will appear in this Smart Playlist… and disappear from the Computers app on the Apple TV.

A 4K movie not tagged 4K… tagged as 1080 or 720, for instance, will disappear from the Smart Playlist… and appear on the Apple TV.

Or.. Another dumb solution is to put 4K as part of the name, tag the movie as HD Problem solved

  11. David VH

Why Desra? Why go to the trouble to tag a movie 4K?

For me, it’s the reason I love Subler… I’m able to make a movie or TV show look great by editing its metadata. A 4K tag is part of that.

Damiano seems to have gotten most of the 4K tag right… there just seems to be something missing, something which will allow it to appear in the Computers app on an Apple TV.

Please send me a file tagged with iFlicks. So I will promptly see what’s the difference.
