Some shows are not playable on Apple TV

Issue #573 new
Joel created an issue

I have about 2 shows so far that when I try to play them on my Apple TV from iTunes on my windows machine or the TV app on my Mac, give me this error about “This content cannot be played because its format is not compatible with Apple TV.”

They were converted using all the same settings as every other show and movie I’ve used Subler for, and the files play just fine on both computers within iTunes/TV app, and quicktime.

I can use quicktime to export them as .mov and then they play just fine (but it takes like 10 hours for a 1 hour episode, so obviously this is not ideal). Any insight on what could be causing the problem and how to fix it?

Subler 1.6.1

Those two shows weren’t originally HEVC video where they? That’s when I run into this issue. More often than not a 720p HEVC video encodes correctly but sometimes it gives the same error you mention in Apple TV. Also, if it was 1080, I always get that error and I have to use Handbrake first.

I don’t think they were HVEC originally. They came from the same source as I got all the other stuff (even the stuff that has worked since this). They were 1080, as are all the shows, but up until sometime in December, I never had a problem with any of them.

What’s interesting is that the one that I only used Subler on is NOT HVEC, but the one exported from Quicktime (after using Subler) is…

I can download the originals again tonight when I get home from work and see what they say (originally an .mkv, but so are all the shows)

So the original file you can see is here. This is the same file as the 05 The Lost Boy above (The Lost Boy above was converted with quicktime and now works)

If there is more info or a better way for me to get you what you need, let me know and I can do that, I’m not SUPER familiar with how to get codec info.

You need to check the H.264 profile and level. You can try to select the video track in Subler and change the level to a lower one too and see if it helps with the AppleTV.

Hi, Subler 1.6.3: Whenever I change HD Video to 4K, the Apple TV 4K stops recognising the video is in my iTunes library. I reverted to Subler 1.6.1 and changed the HD Video to 1080P and the Apple TV 4K acknowledges that the movie is in my iTunes library. I spent days narrowing it down to something about Subler 1.6.3’s 4K HD Video tag that suddenly drops the Apple TV 4K’s ability to recognise it.
