Ability to see current metadata side-by-side with imported metadata

Sometimes I only need to update a few fields and don’t want to overwrite existing metadata in other fields. For example, I might want to keep the description and long description fields while updating other fields. Currently, the only way to do this is to copy-and-paste, but that does not work for more than one field. An option to choose which fields to update or not update or a side-by-side view with the ability to select which fields to overwrite, would be helpful.
