Maintaining display size (not storage size) as the default for imported mp4s

Issue #673 new
Ken Guy created an issue

In older versions of Subler, the display size of files imported from Avidemux were maintained. In the latest version, the storage size is retained. I know that a new display size can be set by unticking the ‘preserve aspect ratio’ box and setting a new aspect ratio for the display size each time, but this is exceedingly onerous when dealing sequentially with multiple files. Is there any way of maintaining display size as the default, as in older versions of Subler? P.S. I am using Monterey on a MacBook Pro (13-inch).

    Dear Damiano

Thanks for getting back to me so promptly.

This is a link to an Avidemux file on my server that gives me problems when I use the latest versions of Subler, together with a screen print of media details.

With old versions of Subler (e.g. 1.6...), the 4:3 aspect ratio is preserved, but it isn't with more recent 1.7... versions.

Can I also take this opportunity to thank you for an amazing product - I, and many others I’m sure, would be truly lost without it.

    Best wishes

    Ken

The issue with that file is that the anamorphic is not signalled at the container level, only in the h.264 bitstream. So Subler copies the container info and put a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio box.

    Dear Damiano

Subler 1.6 (November 19 2019) produces an output file with an aspect ratio of 4:3, the same as the input file. Subler 1.7.2 produces an output file with a ratio of 0.948:1 (the same as the file storage ratio).

    Mediainfo details are shown below:

    Cheers

I could change it to not write the past atom when the aspect ratio is 1:1. But Avidemux should really be fixed to produce a better mp4 file.

I’ll try to contact the authors of Avidemux and hope they are as responsive as you. Thanks!
