ruby-pg - License - Laika Content

Issue #223 resolved
sebastian_scandolo created an issue

In the github README (https://github.com/ged/ruby-pg/blob/master/README.rdoc) the license mentions that:

Portions of the code are from the PostgreSQL project, and are distributed under the terms of the PostgreSQL license, included in the file POSTGRES.

Portions copyright LAIKA, Inc.

Particularly I am concerned about LAIKA, Inc contents. Does this affects any how the Ruby License described for the gem? Is there anything to take into consideration when using this gem? Could the documentation clarify this?

Thanks in advance.

Some code in the gem was written by LAIKA employees on company time, but the code is entirely licensed under the license listed in the README, i.e., 2-clause BSDL or Ruby license. This shouldn't restrict your use of the gem unless you are publicly distributing either a verbatim copy or a derivative work of the gem in which you do not wish to list LAIKA as one of the copyright holders. It's no different than a regular author's copyright statement for a gem she is distributing, such as those listed in the contributors section of the same README.

That said, I'm not a lawyer, so if you're really concerned you should probably seek legal advice.
