If compiled with old diagnostics and restarting, GS2 will open existing NetCDF output ('out.nc' file) and will append to the data instead of overwriting.
At the moment there is no flag to turn this on/off so we could add namelist variable to turn this on. For backwards compatibility this is probably the best option but happy to discuss.
