High UI thread load

Playtime draws more than necessary, especially the background is redrawn far too frequently - this slows down the main thread pretty much.

    re #321 Reduce UI thread load by not painting background so often

    On some controls a priming coat needed to be added so they don't add up and get brighter and brighter.
