USAA_MD_User_Walk_Through

(From Moneydance's user @dtd. Thanks dtd. I did some re-formatting and update a few items to reflect latest version and links).

Using hleofxquotes tool to get USAA ofx files:

  • Read the links to familiarize yourself with the tool and the USAA concepts.
  • This walkthrough at this time is mac specific, but hopefully generalized later.
  • If you don’t have java, you need to install java. Use the defaults unless you know better.
  • Download the latest hleofxquotes tool. (295 as of Feb 16 2021)
  • Open the zip file, you should see a directory with a .jar file in it. That’s the program you actually run.
  • MAC: will not let you run the file. Double click/get turned down – then Go to System Preferences/Security&Privacy/General to “Open Anyway” followed by “Open”
  • When the .jar program is opened, at the bottom, click the Statements tab.
  • Then on the top menu, click File/Financial Institution/New FI – you will be offered a set of templates – select either of USAA Checking and USAA Credit Card.
  • Select the new FI in the top window by clicking on it. The properties window should show the file you will be using.
  • There are four specific items you need to customize with your information. Now that you are this far, if you have not done so, go back to step 1 and at least read the second link. NOTE: Once you fix these items with your information, you need to SAVE the template file by bringing up the property menu (right click on mac) and hitting save.
    clientUid=FIXME
    user.id=FIXME
    user.password=FIXME
    account.1.id=FIXME

  • Ok, so you didn’t read the link yet. Basically, login to USAA. Then go to https://www.usaa.com/accessid - There you can get a Quicken user id and password. But note that you also need a clientUid – and that you grab from the url at the beginning – before you say give me the id/password – yes strange, but it’s a very long string of numbers and letters – so copy and paste the url into some edit box and find client_id=yyyyyyyy-yyyy-yyyy-yyyy-yyyyyyyyyyyy
  • And don’t worry, if you missed this step, just start over and enter the url again – nothing changes, and you can do it more than once.
  • So you should now have 3 of the four items you need to edit the template file (yes, you have to scroll around and find the lines you need to edit) but there is one more. account.1.id ---- (assuming you have only one credit card or one checking account – more than that is advanced…. ;) )
  • The easy bit is checking – you need 10 numbers, so if your account has less than that, add zeroes to the front. i.e. 000####### - obviously you put this in the USAA checking template. Credit card might be tougher, but go ahead and put in your credit card number to begin in the USAA credit card template. More later. Edit the four changes. Don’t Forget To Save – (Properties/Save) (on mac: right click)
  • Ok, here we go. Go back and click on the financial institution again. Just to be sure. Then click the download button. Does it say SUCCESS? No, ok, go back and walk through the steps again, or post a message to https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/online-banking/18262-usaa-using-hleofxquotes-to-download-ofx
  • Oh, it DID say SUCCESS? Great! Doesn’t mean we are done – but we have come far.
  • If the checking was a success, you need to do the (mac) right click on USAA checking and you will see two items – Get Accounts Info and Open FI dir. Click Open FI dir and you will see a few files. If advanced, these are interesting, and you can go back to step 1 to learn more. But really, you want resp.ofx – THAT is what all this work has been about, and what USAA won’t give you anymore without quicken. Now that you have resp.ofx, there are many ways to import it into Moneydance. I may write another “how to” on this, and the caveats, but not now.
  • Oh, wait. Did the credit card download say success, but you get a 203 Account not found error when you tried to import? Sigh. (And you may have just opened resp.ofx with textedit vs moneydance to see this….) So, now do the right click (Get Accounts Info/Open FI dir) – and click Get Accounts Info. You will hopefully get a “here are the accounts associated with USAA”. Wow – checking matches, but the credit card number? What the – that’s not my number! Copy to clipboard, go to where you have account.1.id=myrealcreditcardnumber and paste from the clipboard – the items will be commented out (that’s what the # means at the beginning of the line), so put a # at the beginning of the line for your real creditcard number, and remove the # from the weird credit card number (oh, and if the weird one says account.2.id – well, of course change it to account.1.id – let’s not confuse the computer…)
  • Don’t forget Properties/Save!!!!
  • And let’s try “Download” again. Check resp.ofx and hopefully we do a dance. Otherwise – go to jail, do not pass go, back to reading step 1 again. Or just send another message. We want it to work as well.
  • Finally, there ARE some issues manually uploading these OFX files, so, do an export backup first. But overall, it works pretty great – I mean you have the OFX files from USAA. I’m planning to write about the caveats, like about duplicates, merging, confirming, and how sometimes the memos you manually entered disappear. But these are moneydance issues – the OFX files you get from this process will be the same as if you were using (whispers) quicken.
  • Hope this walkthrough helps. Again – read the links in step 1.
